What is mediation?
Mediation is a voluntary settlement process in which neutral third party, called a mediator, guides the disputants to a reasonable resolution of their dispute by helping them:
- Focus on their needs
- Explore alternatives
- Resolve legal issues
- Negotiate agreements
- Prepare for the future
What are the advantages of mediation?
When mediation is successful, everyone feels good about the outcome. In mediation:
- Everything is confidential
- You save time and money (mediation is free to all eligible WVU students)
- You make the decisions that will affect your life
- ...and everyone walks away a winner
What types of disputes can be mediated?
Any dispute can be resolved through mediation. Mediation has been successful in settling disputes with:
- Neighbors or roommates
- Landlords
- Family members
- Merchants and businesses
- Many Others
- ...and helps build relationships
