Student Legal Services Mediation

What is mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary settlement process in which neutral third party, called a mediator, guides the disputants to a reasonable resolution of their dispute by helping them:

  • Focus on their needs
  • Explore alternatives
  • Resolve legal issues
  • Negotiate agreements
  • Prepare for the future

What are the advantages of mediation?

When mediation is successful, everyone feels good about the outcome. In mediation:

  • You save time and money (mediation is free to all eligible WVU students)
  • You make the decisions that will affect your life
  • ...and everyone walks away a winner

What types of disputes can be mediated?

Any dispute can be resolved through mediation. Mediation has been successful in settling disputes with:

  • Neighbors or roommates
  • Landlords
  • Family members
